Sausage gravy is one of those things that is so much better when it is homemade. This easy sausage gravy recipe will become a staple in your Saturday morning breakfast rotation!

What Is Sausage Gravy?

Sausage gravy is a breakfast staple. Its is often served over biscuits or over a breakfast haystack. One of my favorite out of the box ways to use it is on a breakfast pizza. This gravy is a white, flour based gravy. This is different than brown gravy, which is thickened with cornstarch and served with meats and mashed potatoes.

Ingredients For This Easy Sausage Gravy Recipe

  • Pork Sausage – Choose what you like, ground spicy, sage, or breakfast sausage..
  • Butter – This is a key part of your roux.
  • Flour – The other key part of the roux. I use all purpose.
  • Black Pepper – This is just a sausage gravy necessity.
  • Seasoned Salt – I use Lawry’s or make my own.
  • Garlic Salt – The perfect touch to take this gravy up a notch.
  • Milk – Whole milk is best here.
  • Sugar – I know this sounds crazy, but trust me.

How To Make This Easy Sausage Gravy Recipe

This is such an easy sausage gravy recipe. Begin by browning the sausage win a pan with the butter. Add the seasoned salt, garlic salt and pepper at this stage.

Once meat is browned, mix flour into the pan so that the sausage is fully coated and all butter and fat is soaked up.

Continue to cook, stirring well for 1-2 minutes before adding the milk and sugar.

Stir and bring to a simmer to thicken gravy. Watch closely tom make sure the the bottom of the pan does not burn. Once gravy reaches desired thickness, take off the heat and serve.

Substitutions and Additions

  1. Ground Sausage
    • Substitute with: Spicy sausage or breakfast sausage
    • Why: Take this basic sausage gravy up a notch by switching out the sausage you use.
  2. Milk
    • Substitute with: An unsweetened milk substitute like almond milk
    • Why: Adjusted for diet restrictions

Ingredients

  • 1 Lb Pork Sausage
  • 1/4 Cup Butter
  • 1/2 Cup Flour
  • 1/2 tsp. Black Pepper
  • 1 tsp. Seasoned Salt
  • 1 tsp. Garlic Salt
  • 1 Quart Milk
  • 1/2 Tbsp. Sugar

Instructions

  1. Brown the sausage in a pan with butter. Add all seasonings as the sausage cooks.
  2. Once sausage is cooked, add flour and stir until all of the sausage is fully coated and all of the butter has been soaked up. Cook for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Whisk in milk so that there are no lumps of flour. Stir in sugar and cook until thickened.
  4. Serve over biscuits or however you prefer to eat sausage gravy.
